Our Journey

Chilliwack Senior Peer Counsellors began in 2000 with a simple but powerful idea: seniors supporting seniors. Founded by Pam Wilson and Dee Neuman, the program started with no budget but plenty of heart. Building on research and a display at Cottonwood Mall the year prior, Pam and Dee recruited community members such as Helene Long, who went on to complete Peer Counselling training in Abbotsford and later became a trainer herself, she is still part of the organization today . Clem Jepson, who was 86 when she began, also attended some of the training sessions, and Anna and her played a key role in helping to recruit others.
Our first training group included Vic Harms, Nancy Allison, and Bob Hocking, among others. This group laid the foundation for what has grown into a trusted, volunteer-based non-profit organization, dedicated to listening, understanding, and walking alongside seniors in our community.
Much of the momentum came from Pam Wilson, whose years of experience with seniors made her deeply aware of the need in Chilliwack. Despite travelling multiple times a week from Abbotsford, she spearheaded the program with the support of Dee and Helene, who contributed to training and shared expenses. Abbotsford Peer Support also lent a hand by adapting their brochures and posters for Chilliwack.
Over the years, the program has grown and adapted, moving offices several times—even weathering a flood and leaving behind a beautiful mountain view on Airport Road. Most recently, we relocated once again, moving from our long-term home at Chilliwack Community Services to our current Harvard Place location.
Today, our trained volunteer peer counsellors continue to provide one-on-one visits, outreach calls, and compassionate support to seniors facing life changes, health concerns, or feelings of loneliness and isolation. We don’t offer quick fixes — instead, we offer empathy, encouragement, and the reassurance that no one has to face life’s challenges alone.
For more than two decades, our journey has been about making a difference — one conversation, one visit, and one caring connection at a time. And at the heart of it all remains our greatest strength: the dedication of our volunteers, who serve with compassion, confidentiality, and respect for all.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide compassionate peer support to seniors in our community.
Senior Peer Counsellors are trained to listen with care and understanding, helping seniors explore their feelings and recognize their own strengths in order to make independent choices. We provide compassionate support to enhance, to the best of our ability, the quality of their lives within their own community. Our work is guided by tact, confidentiality, empathy, and respect. We are committed to serving all seniors in a loving, caring, and supportive manner—regardless of religion, nationality, or background.

What We Cover
What our volunteers can do:
- One-on-One Visits: Volunteers provide friendly companionship, listen, and offer information to help seniors feel supported and connected.
- Java Social: A weekly social gathering with a chosen topic for discussion, giving seniors a chance to connect, share ideas, and enjoy company.
- Connect seniors to community resources and support networks.
- Deliver monthly Enhanced Meals in partnership with CNHPS to those who cannot get out.
What We Don’t Cover
Some of the things our volunteers do Not do:
- We do not do housekeeping or yard work
- We do not drive clients to appointments
- We do not do your banking
- We do not do overnight visits
- We will not except gifts from clients
- We do not provide professional counselling, medical, legal, or financial advice.
- We do not provide emergency or crisis intervention—please contact 911 or local crisis services in urgent situations.
Why We’re Here:
- We’re here to listen, not to work miracles.
- We’re here to help Seniors discover what they are feeling, not to make the feelings go away.
- We’re here to help Seniors discover their options, not to decide for them what they should do.
- We are here to discuss steps with Seniors, not to take the steps for them.
- We are here to help Seniors discover their own strengths, not to rescue them and leave them still vulnerable.
- We are here to help Seniors discover they can help themselves, not to take responsibility for them.
- We are here to help Seniors choose, not to make it unnecessary for them to make difficult choices.
- We are here to provide support for changes, not to avoid changes.
